|PRIME MINISTER Boris Johnson gave the construction and manufacturing industries a boost by announcing workers can return to jobs in the first steps to lifting the coronavirus lockdown. |
In a Sunday night address Johnson told people to return to work if they are unable to do their jobs from home. “We now need to stress that anyone who can’t work from home, for instance those in construction or manufacturing, should be actively encouraged to go to work”, he told the country.
Johnson said social distancing measures must be in place for workers, including on public transport, but encouraged as many as possible to travel by walking, cycling, or by car.
Also this weekend transport secretary Grant Shapps announced a £2 billion package, with a programme to be published in early June, to double cycling and increase walking by 2025. Measures could include pop-up bike lanes, wider pavements and cycle and bus-only streets.
