Construction sites to reopen under social distancing rules

HOUSING MINISTER Robert Jenrick welcomed the reopening of construction sites by major housebuilders as a “big step” for the industry.

Vistry Partnerships began a phased reopening of its sites last week, and has been joined by construction leaders Persimmon and Taylor Wimpey in returning to work under newly-formulated social distancing rules.

Writing on Twitter, Jenrick hailed the controversial news as “another big step forward for housing and construction”, saying thousands of jobs would be secured. He added: “Social distancing guidelines must be followed. But where they can be, construction can and should continue.”

Persimmon chief executive David Jenkinson said: “We believe that we are now able to return to site safely and support the UK’s economic recovery from the pandemic.”
